Harris Khalique is a poet and public policy specialist who is currently the Chief Executive of Strengthening Participatory Organisation (SPO), one of the largest civil society organisations of Pakistan. SPO works out of its 17 offices for capacity building of community institutions, public interest organisations, women groups, civil society networks and social movements for strengthening democratic governance, social justice and peace & social harmony. Its partners work in the areas of local governance, basic education, healthcare and humanitarian response.

 

Harris Khalique has earlier worked with Save the Children UK, Amnesty International and NGO Resource Centre in South Asia and Europe and has been a consultant to development, cultural and film projects. While his interests straddle issues of governance, new institutional economics and identity politics, on which he has published internationally, he is an accomplished poet with seven collections of poetry in Urdu and English. He also co-wrote a book of creative non-fiction with partitions of South Asia in 1947 and 1971 serving as the backdrop. His poetry is anthologised by University of Georgia Press, W.W. Norton and Co. and Oxford University Press and on the web lyrikline.org. He has spoken to university audiences and conferences in many countries and contributes a weekly column to Daily "The News International".

 

Harris Khalique graduated in mechanical engineering from NED University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi, and earned a master's degree in development management from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
