Sad News - Muhammad Canteenwala Passed Away

Dear Old Publicans,

It is with deep regret that I have to inform you that Muhammad Canteenwala passed away this morning. As most of us will recall the Cantt Public School's canteen was synonymous with Muhammad. He was always willing to help and extend a loan if anyone was short of cash during recess.

Despite being seriously ill, Muhammad participated in the Golden Jubilee Celebrations held on December 5, 2008. Photograph taken at the event can be seen on the right.

Muhammad's son Karim is currently running the school canteen and can be contacted on +92-302-236.1164 for condolences.

With kind regards.

Administrator (Ashraf Kapadia - Class of 1969)

InnaLillahe wa inna alaihe rajeoun -

Indeed, a very sad day for the Cantt Publicans.
Mohammad, an icon, a legendary figure and '' a point of reference'' to
Old & New Publicans is no more.
He was the most talked person & respected by all of us.
Here I would recall what Zafar( Old Publican from US & Raju's friend & class fellow))
suggested about financial assistance to the Old teachers.
I would ask Javed Bhai to call for such assistance for Mohammad's family as well as an exception.
Mirza Naseeruddin (Class of 1969)

Dear Family of Late Honorable Muhammad Canteen Walla,

I have used the word Honorable for him because in my mind he is worthy of all respect being a noble, friendly, courteous, very energetic and the list can go on. Every break time he served us (Thousands with affection) day after day , year after year ! and his memory shall linger on forever.

May Almighty Allah bless his soul in heaven and grant him peace, his family , all the strength to bear this very personal loss with courage and for his son Abdul Karim the wisdom and direction to carry the gauntlet and take his late father's business to greater heights InshAllah. (I phoned and spoke to him soon after reading your email and many thanks for sending the information although it is of sadness but life is a mixture of things!)

If I can be of any assistance fro here please do let me know.

Salaams,

Yours in sorrow,
Muhammad Javed Ahmad Pai (Class of 1963)

Hamid Jaleel Zubairi (Class of 1971)

Thanks! You are doing a fantastic job by refreshing our memories of good old days. I remember him as a young man, when I was a student. If I remember correctly, 25 paisas for Coke & 25 paisas for the most delicious patty. I have never tasted such tasty patty as used to be made by him & it used to finish very quickly. The rush to get the stuff was unbelievable. Canteen was close to the Library. I used to get Rs. 1 pocket money a day & the school fee used to be Rs. 15 per month. Regards,
Riaz Khan (Class of 1966)

Thanks for informing. May Muhammad soul rest in peace.

Sad news indeed. He was quite a character and was as popular in the school as anyone else. We would make it a point to meet him during our visit to the school . Some years back when we met him, he almost wept with joy to see the us, the old students. He was ever so kind and caring. I wonder if we can do something for his family?

It was so SAD to heared about "Muhammad" May Allah give him a best place in Haeven( AMIN).
Naseem ur Rahman (Class of 1982)

With all of you I too share in our sadness at the news of the passing away of the distinctive
Mohammad Canteenwalla. He is an intrinsic part of our collective, unforgettable experience
of being in Public School, of refreshing us with cold drinks and warm patties, often when at
least some of us, including myself, didn't have enough money. He gave us credit with more trust
than banks do now even after we offer them collateral. Though infirm at our Golden Jubilee his
presence was so pleasing and evocative.

I am presently overseas, returning shortly to Karachi and will discuss with Trustees about ways
to pay an apt tribute to him.

May Allah rest the departed soul in eternal peace and give strength to his family to bear this loss with
fortitude. Ameen.
Javed Jabbar (Class of 1961)

A very sad news for each of us, as he has a long association with us, Regretted, that in every session during any event of old publicans, I Personally requested verbally to trustees for monetary support of Muhammad during his illness in miserable condition, which is not materialized in his life, it may provide comfort in few days of his life, however, we now pray for his maghfirat, and financial support for his son as suggested by Mr Naseer.

Thanks all Publicans for sharing your true sentiments on the sad demise of Mohammad. We all have to go one day but such exchange of sentiments and caring have revived, in a way, spirit of togetherness and being loved.
May God bless his and all other departed souls in eternal peace, Amen. I share the thoughts about Coke and Patti served by him as the 'ultimate luxury' which we all cherish even now. I have had several bad days when only coke was available!! See how these small things and gestures of kindness from each of towards others bring joy, comfort, calm and happiness which we badly need today.
Please stay together and live a happy and blessed life. Allah aap ka hami o nasir ho. Wassalam
