Sub: 1. Invitation for 13th April: launch of first PAT teachers' workshop 2. PAT progress !

Dear fellow Publicans,

Assalam-o-alaikum and greetings.

1.  As you may be aware, in the first 3 months of 2009, we completed all the formalities of legally establishing the Publican Alumni Trust (PAT) and initiating its work programme.

2. Our website, maintained so diligently by Ashraf Kapadia, keeps you updated on progress.

3. The Board of Trustees has held 2 meetings to date i.e. on 16th February 2009 and 26th March 2009. Fairly comprehensive discussions have been held and relevant decisions taken. The third meeting is set for 11 a.m. on 11th April 2009.

4. Substantial work also takes place in between meetings.

5. Several preparatory steps for our work programme have either been completed or initiated. The critical priority is now to reach the original fund mobilization target of Rs.5 million. We have so far reached only about Rs.1.8 million. Publicans, wake up: you have nothing to lose but your hard-earned money: but all for a great cause.

Unfortunately, over the past 2 decades, the economic profile of parents of students in the successor Schools has become predominantly low income and extremely vulnerable to inflation. Each contribution we make through PAT will help the disadvantaged as much as the deserving.

6. To take the first step toward fulfilling the aims of the Trust which, in essence, is to promote excellence in education in Pakistan, with particular reference to the successor Schools of the original Public School, the Board of Trustees has approved, in principle, a programme of work for the period April-December 2009 in diverse fields.

7. Details will be circulated separately and shortly by Publican Zohair Ashir, Convenor of the Committee on Educational Initiatives.

8. The initiatives synthesize suggestions and ideas contributed during the past 9 months and crystallize and enhance them into a practical, purposeful form.

9. The Federal Government Directorate of Educational Institutions at GHQ Rawalpindi has approved the programme and extended full support as have the Principals of the 2 main Schools.

10. The programme has been formulated through extensive consultation with the stake-holders.

11. On 2nd April 2009, Zohair Ashir and I visited the Schools to meet once again with the Principals of the Boys' School and the F.G. Minwala Girls' School as also with Lt. Col. Tariq Mehmood who heads the Directorate office in Karachi.

12. It has been agreed that the first programme of PAT will be in the form of a Teachers' Capacity Building Workshop conducted for PAT by the Teachers' Resource Centre, Karachi. The workshop will be attended by a total of 20 teachers, 10 from each of the 2 schools and the Principals/Vice Principals. With 2 hours per day for 4 days a week, for 2 weeks, the workshop will represent an investment of about 320 person hours (previously know as man-hours !) to enhance the motivational and teaching skills of teachers.

13. All Publicans, particularly those residing in Karachi are cordially invited to be present at the inaugural of the workshop being held on Monday, 13th April 2009 at 1 p.m. at F.G. Minwala Girls Public School.

The programme commences with a light lunch followed by an introduction to the PAT programme and the workshop. The actual workshop will commence by about 2:30 p.m. at which time non-participants will depart the premises.

14. At this time, we expect about 50 to 60 persons to participate in this launch event.

15. However, to enable adequate arrangements for a larger number, if required, kindly confirm your intention to attend by sending an e-mail to Atiq Rehman, Secretary, PAT (e-mail: atiq@cyber.net.pk) and / or

Zeeshan Panhwar, Coordinator, PAT (e-mail: zeeshan.panhwer@americomtechnology.com)

no later than 10th April 2009.

16. The Chairman of the Advisory Council of PAT, Publican Admiral (r) Shahid Karimullah will also join us for the launch. Other Publicans with a special interest in contributing actively to the educational programme of PAT are requested to also grace the occasion.

17. Thank you for your attention.

Look forward to working together through PAT for our shared values and aims.

With best wishes,

Javed Jabbar
